Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
Like the title reads folks! I am curious to know what you all think about the melee struggle feature. Personally i do not like it because i feel it takes control and speed away from the match...

In the single player mode it is fun but in online matches it just decreases performance Also, the host always wins the melee struggle, so it's biased in my opinion.

One doesn't allow it to happen to oneself too much. But, one does have the issue of getting pounded into the ground with the button symbols flashing on screen in time to a weird Meshuggah riff when it does.

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
I've got 5 problems with the melee struggle: 1) It comes up at annoying moments sometimes. 2) You are defenseless against any attacks flying around, both when you are suspended motionless preparing for the melee struggle and after it starts 3) Monitor smashes can be interupted by a melee struggle starting (very annoying) 4) There's a definate host bias in online play, the more lag the worse it is 5) If it starts while you are in kaioken, you lose all your health for nothing... which can easily lead to an automatic death if you lose the melee struggle
That being said, I like the concept. Instead of hurling energy at each other (which depending on what move you use can give the advantage to one player or the other) it's truly player vs. player, mano a mano, may the best man win. It's as close to realistic dbz melee as I would imagine this game is going to get. I would like it to be fine-tuned, if possible.

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
I think we missed to think about the potential we could have with melee struggle, borgie has a point with "It's as close to realistic dbz melee as I would imagine this game is going to get"
What we never thought about would be to use it in a more cinematic way, like "start struggle - use five keys - let the chars perform something spectacular according to the result - repeat - best of five ends with an ultimate hit"
Though such stuff would need a while of devtime to be established for all chars, i vote for the non-existing option "It needs a reboot - abandon the current one till we can get one"
at same time i request options for an in between solution to keep it alive and reduce the number of times it will start

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
I voted annoying because i believe it to be one of the most broken gaming concepts ever. I place games above movies but below books on my "things i like" list. Books rule the list because it gives my imagination free reign to fill in all the details. Games are fun because as a player you get to do stuff that's impossible in real life. Movies are also fun, but it's a very static experience and you have no control over it, and your imagination has less stuff to do.
Melee struggle is to me something that breaks/stops the game, plays a little movie, and then punishes or rewards you for how fast you can press buttons. Because it takes my control away and forces me to watch i'd love to get rid of it... but today something occurred to me. If as a player i had a real choice to enter melee struggle, and there was no way to be forced into it... and if it would work right in both MP and SP... Then i could see it as fun. I would then only trigger it when i am feeling like gambling on my finger bashing speed...
But that would mean that 2 players would both have to choose to go into it... any ideas folks?

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
Loozzer's idea sounds interesting. It always seemed to me that the melee struggle ended badly. All that action, then... nothing. A special combo at the end would give it more of a purpose.
The optional melee struggle sounds like a good idea as well, though I can only think of a few ways in which it could be optional without getting too complicated and it won't be a major gameplay stopper.
Melee struggle could be made into a follow-up move, like instant transmission is. The target can have an escape option, once again like instant transmission, though for this the opponent can't follow and try it again.
Or, there could be game option enabling/disabling melee struggles when you start a game. It's the only other way I can think of to do it without asking for consent before it starts or prompting discussion in-game to arrange for it to happen, both of which would stop gameplay. Problem is, it's really the host's choice in this case.

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
i like the idea of "pressing the right buttons i could evade the struggle".
other option could be just: the first one who press the button decides

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
if one player decides to do it and the other cannot escape, the other is always forced... Kinda like both Loozzer's and Locustus ideas...

Re: Poll: what do you think about melee struggle?
My escape option should give the other person the choice whether or not to agree to the melee struggle (doing nothing would let it happen, pressing the key sequence would get one out of it), though now that I think about it the way to get out of it should be bigger and more obvious than the prompts under the health for follow-up moves are. I've noticed a lot of people don't pay much attention to those unless they are pointed out, becuase they are too busy focusing on the battle.
